Traditional Computer-Only Realted Tasks are Migrating to Tablets/Smartphones
As a proud owner of one of the latest iPad Pros …
And,
Being caught up up in tracking the latest news articles related to this fantastic device – (especially in the wake of critical articles related to Tim Cooks’s promotional statement describing the iPad Pro as a laptop replacement for many, many people) …
I’ve stepped back to simply survey how times are changing in the way we are using computers. Specifically, I’ve started thinking about how traditional computer-only related tasks are being replaced by smartphones or tablets. I picked up my iPhone, and noted the apps I used regularly. What follows is a list of tasks I perform using my phone, or tablet as opposed to a computer:
Checking weather, checking my bank balance, tracking online orders to know when they will be delivered to my doorstep – even making online orders! I exclusively use my phone during travel for holding my boarding pass and getting notifications about Airline gate changes. I pay attention to local news notifications – especially when related to interstate traffic for the trip to/from work – (it seems that barges have hit the Mississippi River bridge a lot lately, as well as 18 wheeler petroleum spills). I use my phone to pay bills, navigate to new locations, whether home or when traveling out of state. I use my iPad for reading of all types or materials – Bible reading, recreational reading, academic or work-related study. I use my phone/tablet for organizing documents in EverNote and Drop Box – even blogging (this article is being written in the WordPress app running on iPad Pro – typed using a Bluetooth keyboard!) I take pictures and share to social media – as I’m sure everyone with a FaceBook account does; but, just think about how that’s something that has changed with the coming of the smartphone – people used to do this only on a computer at home! This list is being thrown together rather quickly – there are probably tons of more tasks that could be inserted here.
One last thing I’ll add to this list – art, and handwriting. The Apple Pencil is an incredible game-changer of a stylus. I use it all the time now – even the idea to post this article came about after generating a handwritten list of tasks first – done, of course, with the Apple Pencil. 🙂
I’ll insert that list below to close out this article.

I just thought about something that is rather obvious. The list above is specific to me. I generated it from looking over the apps I’ve collected on my devices – and thought about how often I use those apps. If another person were to do the same exercise – they would generate a different list. That list would be specific for them. This is nothing more than a demonstration of the meaning behind the phrase, personal computing. Indeed, computing is more and more personal down this chain:
Desktop Computer -> Laptop Computer -> tablet computing -> smartphone -> smartwatch ( -> smart jewelry ??).
